The Plant Protection Institute of the National Academy of Agrarian Sciences of Ukraine was founded in 1946 and is one of the leading research institutions of our country, which actively influence the development of agricultural production in the country.
The Institute is the only scientific institution for plant protection and quarantine in Ukraine, which unites about 20 institutions and research stations in a scientific and methodical center for conducting research in the areas where the main agricultural crops are grown.
2 research stations and 1 research farm are subordinate to the institution as independent statutory entities with the rights of a legal entity:
- Research Station of Quarantine of Grapes and Fruit Crops of the Scientific Research Institute of the National Academy of Sciences (Odesa, 49 Fontanska Doroga St.);
- Ukrainian Research Plant Quarantine Station of the Scientific Research Institute of the National Academy of Sciences (Boyani village, Novoselytsky district, Chernivtsi region);
- SE "Experimental Farming "Takhtaulovo" (Poltava Region, Poltava District, Takhtaulové Village, Tsentralna St., 5).
51 scientists, including 8 doctors (in particular, 2 academicians and 1 corresponding member) and 29 candidates of sciences, are directly involved in the implementation of research works. 4 people have the academic title of professor, 21 have the title of senior researcher.
Science that feeds the country
The Institute of Plant Protection of the National Academy of Sciences is a leading scientific institution that performs fundamental and applied research in the field of crop protection. Its mission is to:
- to provide a scientific basis for the protection of plants from pests, pathogens and weeds through the development of innovative, ecologically safe and cost-effective methods;
- contribute to increasing the yield and quality of agricultural products by minimizing phytosanitary risks;
- to develop new means of plant protection, in particular biological preparations and adaptive technologies of integrated protection, which meet the challenges of climate change, soil degradation and the appearance of new harmful organisms;
- to support the agricultural sector with knowledge — to provide scientific and methodological support to farmers, agrarians and state structures in matters of phytosanitary monitoring, forecasting and protection of crops;
- spread Ukrainian scientific achievements in the world, while preserving the national traditions of agricultural science.
Ways of implementing the mission
- coordination of fundamental and applied research under the "Plant Protection" program, creation of innovative products and transfer of innovations into production and the educational process;
- use of the latest technologies for forecasting the phytosanitary state of agrocenoses: GPS, GIS (geo-information systems), DZZ (remote sensing of the Earth);
- development of the theoretical foundations of crop selection for resistance against harmful organisms, taking into account the achievements of biotechnology;
- justification of the strategy of ecologically safe protection of vegetable and fruit crops;
- substantiation of the updated system of integrated plant protection in different soil and climatic zones of Ukraine;
- scientific support of the plant quarantine service: phytosanitary risk analysis, identification and diagnosis of adventitious organisms, improvement of control means;
- training of highly qualified scientific personnel through postgraduate and doctoral studies in specialty 202 "Protection and Quarantine of Plants";
- marketing activity and information and scientific support of agricultural production of Ukraine;
- scientific and organizational support for the activities of the Scientific and Methodological Center "Plant Protection".
Main directions activity
The Institute of Plant Protection of the National Academy of Sciences carries out scientific research aimed at preserving and increasing the yield of agricultural crops by developing innovative methods of protection against pests, diseases and weeds.
- Fundamental and applied research — conceptual foundations of plant protection, ecologically safe protection systems, monitoring of the phytosanitary state of crops, biological methods and integrated technologies.
- Development and implementation of the latest means of protection — creation of biological preparations and improvement of chemical means, research of resistance of harmful organisms to pesticides, testing and certification of means of protection.
- Scientific and methodological support of agricultural production — recommendations and technological maps for farmers, counseling and forecasts of the spread of harmful organisms.
- International cooperation — participation in international projects and forums, partnership with scientific institutions of Europe, Asia and the USA.

Structure institute
The institute unites nine scientific laboratories, the department of intellectual property and innovation marketing, an experimental farm and two plant quarantine stations — a total of 12 divisions.
The Institution is subordinated to the Research Station for the Quarantine of Grapes and Fruit Crops (Odesa), the Ukrainian Scientific Research Station for the Quarantine of Plants (the village of Boyany, Chernivtsi Region) and the SE "Research Farm "Takhtaulovo" (Poltava Region).
