History and achievements

The Laboratory of Forecasts was founded in 1972 at the Research Institute of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences. Its first director was a doctor of biol. of Sciences, member-cor. NAS of Ukraine V.G. Valley In 1975, the laboratory was headed by candidate of Sciences V.P. Omelyuta, since 1989 candidate. Sciences B. F. Neskorozheny, since 1993 Doc. V.M. Chaika, from 2006 to 2015 T.M. Neverovska, and since 2015 the laboratory has been headed by Candidate Sciences A.V. Fedoreno. During this period, the laboratory carried out a large amount of research and development works related to the improvement and development of methods of forecasting the phytosanitary condition. This is a reliable basis for the further development of prognostic topics at the Institute.

Under the leadership of V. G. Dolin, in-depth studies of the biology, ecology, and morphology of blacksmith beetles, the importance of various species and groups of insects as pests of agricultural crops were conducted. The systematic index prepared and published (Dolin, 1964) included a description of 129 larval species, which accounted for 80% of the woodpecker fauna of the European part of the USSR, of which 50 were described for the first time. Based on the research conducted, the territory of Ukraine was zoned into zones of harm to wireworms. During 1970-1974, methodical aspects of forecasting soil insects were developed, their species composition depending on the rural area. cultures  Employees I.V. Grihorovych, O.M. Kravchenko, O.E. Krykun conducted classic works on the study of the Colorado beetle in Ukraine, which made it possible to justify the methods of forecasting the phenology, distribution and economic thresholds of the harmfulness of the Colorado beetle, which has not lost its relevance until now. Based on the analysis of long-term data, the zoning of the territory of Ukraine and the determination of the harmfulness zones of the winter snowdrop were carried out (O.M. Kravchenko, O.B. Zelenska, R.M. Skibinska, B.F. Neskorozheny).

The outbreak of mass reproduction of the meadow butterfly observed in Ukraine in 1975-1978 prompted the laboratory specialists V. P. Omelyuta, V. P. Kubaychuk, R. M. Skybynska, and Y. F. Krasyukov to direct their efforts to studying the biology of the pest. Research on the clarification of the ecological and physiological parameters of the dynamics of meadow butterfly populations made it possible to develop a system of phased annual and phenological forecasting.

Many years of research into the biology and ecology of the most important pests of agricultural crops enabled the laboratory team to develop the main principles of forecasting the development of harmful insects, to draw up prognostic equations for the expediency of protective measures and their scope (Omelyuta, Hryhorovych, 1981; Omelyuta, 1989).

B. F. Neskorogheny, O. B. Zelenska, and R. M. Skybynska developed long- and short-term forecast models using standard weather indicators, as well as computer topography methods for assessing and forecasting the phytosanitary state (1988-1993).

A particularly large analytical and very valuable work for the practice of plant protection was carried out by Academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine V.P. Vasyliev and V.P. Omelyuta with a team of scientists in preparation for the publication of reference material: "Pests of agricultural crops and forest plantations" (in three volumes, 1973-1975); "Methodological recommendations on the status of the development forecast and accounting for pests and diseases of agricultural plants", 1981; "Accounting of pests and diseases of agricultural crops", 1986; "Recommendations for determining economic thresholds of harmfulness of agricultural crop pests and their use in the practice of plant protection", 1987; "Handbook on protection of field crops", 1993.  These publications became the table books of plant protection scientists and agronomists.

Under the leadership of doc. s.-g. of Sciences V.M. Seagulls by the laboratory staff: Ph.D. O.V. Baklanova, candidate of science and technology. n. O.O. Bakhmut, V.P.Kravchenko, and R.M.Panteleychuk developed for the first time in Ukraine: regulations for the prevention of emergency situations in the phytosanitary state associated with the mass reproduction of harmful locusts, which includes a patented locust monitoring system, a long-term forecast of the status of locust populations, an operational forecast of the threat to locust agrocenoses, a list of the range of ecologically safe pesticides in sanitary and resort conditions zones of Ukraine;  the impact of climate warming on the spread and harmfulness of a complex of major pests, the impact of the termination of rural-urban  production in the conditions of the exclusion zone of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant on the state of the populations of the main pests of rural areas. cultures, the impact of the Agricultural Reform on the phytosanitary state of the agrocenoses of Ukraine, which in turn made it possible to investigate the impact of ecological and economic factors on the distribution and harmfulness of populations of the main pests of rural areas. cultures

By V.M. Chaika The theory of the dynamics of the number of pests is substantiated, which has a significant contribution to the scientific knowledge of the patterns of cyclic fluctuations in the number of insects, and serves to provide scientific support for the forecast of pests. The formation of the phytosanitary state of Ukraine under conditions of climate warming is conceptually substantiated.   O.V. Baklanova summarized materials on the general condition of locusts in Ukraine.

In the future, the laboratory employees improved the system of monitoring and controlling the number of bread beetles, the locust complex, pests of corn, rapeseed, and apple glaze using: colored, pheromone traps, the latest technologies (DZZ and GPS navigation), which helps reduce labor costs for forecasting and saving the harvest from 7% to 50% (A.V. Fedorenko, O.O. Bakhmut, O.V. Baklanova, T.M. Neverovska, A.A. Polishchuk).

The Interactive computer program "Plant Protection" (a package of combined programs on CD media) has been created, which makes it possible to determine the feasibility of using plant protection products. It is based on combined mathematical equations that take into account the number of the pest, its EPSH, KEPSH for the entomological complex of winter wheat, sugar beet, corn, sunflower, rapeseed, and apple trees. Equations are used with correction factor to take into account the patterns of dependence between the increase in the number of populations of harmful fauna and the decrease in the yield. The program transforms operational environmental information about the current phytosanitary status into economic categories - possible crop losses (in kind or monetary terms).  The program significantly facilitates the work of agronomists in plant protection.Contributes to the preservation of 15-20% of the crop. There are no analogues in Ukraine.

The "Database of long-term data on the dynamics of the population of rural and urban areas" was formed. crops by dominant pests", which was transformed into a cartographic display with the help of computer technologies, with the aim of creating a forecast of the phytosanitary state and avoiding possible outbreaks of pests (main crops, dominant pests, all regions of Ukraine).

Since 1972, all employees of the laboratory have participated in the publication of the collection "Forecast of the phytosanitary state of agrocenoses and recommendations for the protection of rural areas". plants from pests, diseases and weeds in the farms of Ukraine", issued by the Department of Forecasts of the State Production and Consumer Service of Ukraine. Since 1996, the laboratory has been preparing a weekly analytical survey of the phytosanitary status of agricultural crops, based on which written operational information is provided to the Presidium of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences regarding crop threats and recommendations on optimal methods of controlling the number of harmful populations in agrocenoses of Ukraine.

Today, research continues on the formation of computer databases of statistical data on the distribution and number of major pests in Ukraine, the monitoring systems of agricultural crop pests are being improved, and the methods of forecasting the distribution and harmfulness of the main agricultural crop pests are being improved.

Purpose and tasks

The purpose of the research is to analyze the phytosanitary state of agrocenoses of Ukraine and determine the factors of its formation in modern conditions. Also, create databases of long-term weather data using computer technologies, study and analyze the dynamics of GTK, SET, SAT, etc. indicators, which will make it possible to follow the regularities of outbreaks of the number of phytophages. Develop a forecast of the development of the main harmful organisms for the planning of protective measures, and timely prevention and elimination of situations associated with outbreaks of their number.
