From the very beginning of the organization of the Institute (1946), it included a phytopathology laboratory. Its first head was V. P. Muravyov, a corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR. Over time, the laboratory was constantly reorganized. Significant fundamental phytopathological studies on various agricultural crops were conducted by Academician of the National Academy of Sciences V.F. Peresypkin, Doctor of Biology. H. V. Hrysenko, Candidates of Sciences B. P. Martsulevych, M. K. Fomyuk, V. D. Arkhipova, N. I. Salunska, M. O. Tselle, K. O. Samotsvetova, O. I. Shashin, V. A. Markhasyova, Y. M. Sheludko, L. S. Nedobytkin, L. O. Kryuchkova and others.

In its current form, the phytopathology laboratory has existed since 2003.
