         The Laboratory of Nematology was created at the Institute of Plant Protection of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine in 1991 at the initiative of Doctor of Biological Sciences, Corresponding Professor of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Honored Worker of Science and Technology of Ukraine D.D. Sigaryova, and today remains the only scientific and methodical center in Ukraine for nematodes of field, vegetable, forest and flower and decorative crops.        

         MAIN DIRECTIONS OF RESEARCH:

         - study of phytohelminthiasis of grain crops, potatoes, sugar beets, rapeseed, vegetable and flower-decorative crops in closed soil, as well as ornamental and forest crops;

• search for easily accessible, low energy-intensive and effective methods of detecting phytoparasitic nematodes, establishing their species composition and studying harmfulness;
• development of a system for forecasting the development of nematodes;
• development of environmentally safe measures to protect the main field crops, vegetable crops and flower and ornamental plants from nematodes.
• research of entomopathogenic nematodes (EPN) from the genera Steinernema and Heterorhabditis and the possibilities of their use against secretive harmful insects, for the creation of a new type of biological preparations.

PROVISION OF SERVICES

The Nematology Laboratory of the Institute of Plant Protection of the National Academy of Sciences offers:

Examination of the year lands, nurseries and greenhouses in order to detect nematode diseases of plants (nematodes) and the species composition of nematodes that cause them

Identifying sources of nematodes and forecasting changes in numbers

Identification of phytoparasitic nematodes in soil and plant material

Development of a system of protective measures;

Identification of quarantine species of nematodes;

Determination of anti-nematode effectiveness of pesticides, biological protection agents and agrotechnical methods;

Evaluation of the degree of resistance of plant varieties against phytoparasitic nematodes (potatoes, sugar beets, rapeseed, winter wheat, tomatoes, cucumbers, decorative and flower plants).

Laboratory-developed crop protection systems against parasitic nematodes are offered for production

The technology of using resistant potato varieties against the golden potato cyst-forming nematode.

The technology of using harvest crops of cruciferous crops to combat the beet nematode.

System of anti-nematode measures on vegetable crops in greenhouse farms.

Technology for limiting the harmfulness of a complex of phytoparasitic nematodes on sugar beets, rapeseed and winter wheat.

JOB PROSPECTS:

• research on the species composition and improvement of systems for monitoring and controlling the number of parasitic nematodes on field and vegetable crops in accordance with changes in the phytosanitary situation and production technologies, with subsequent implementation in practice
• creation together with breeding institutions of new nematode-resistant varieties of potatoes, tomatoes, cabbage crops (rapeseed, mustard, oil radish) and others;
• creation of biological preparations based on entomopathogenic nematodes
