Researchers writing in Journal of Pest Science examined how trichome characteristics of different squash (Cucurbita pepo) cultivars relate to whitefly Bemisia tabaci abundance and the efficacy of biological and chemical treatments. They found that trichome density, length, and diameter varied across cultivars, and nymph abundance decreased with increasing non-glandular trichome density in a cultivar-dependent manner. Cultivars with higher trichome density (Early Summer, Fortune, Respect, Gentry) showed lower nymph abundance, while those with lower density (Green Eclipse, Golden Glory, Lioness, Gray Summer) showed higher nymph abundance.
